March 23, 2009 – Mobile, Alabama – The Community Foundation of South Alabama, a nonprofit foundation that plays a key role in addressing the needs of the community through leadership and grants, announces its Board of Directors and Officers. The board includes one director newly elected to a four-year term, four elected to a second four-year term and twenty-two continuing their current terms.
The annual meeting provided an opportunity for members and guests to view the 2008 accomplishments of The Community Foundation of South Alabama (CFSA) and to thank outgoing and incoming members of the board.
Officers for 2009 include Ron Melton – Chair of the Board; Randy Wingard – Vice Chair; George V. Davis, CPA, Lawrence & Lawrence, P. A. – Treasurer; and Michael S. Marshall, Editor and Vice President of the Press Register – Secretary. G. Porter Brock, Jr., Partner of Hand Arendall, L. L. C is the Immediate Past Chair.
The newly elected member of the board is E. Walter McKean, CPA. Mr. McKean retired from McKean & Associates, P.A., Certified Public Accountants. He is a native of Mobile, Alabama and graduated from The University of Alabama.
Directors elected to a second term are: George V. Davis, Michael S. Marshall, John R. McNeil and Raymond R. Wingard.
Continuing their terms on the CFSA board are: Walter A. Bell; G. Porter Brock, Jr.; Yuell B. Busey; Murray E. Cape; J. Gary Cooper; Victor T. Crawford; Barbara Drummond; Dr. Bernard Eichold; Dora Finley; Robert M. Hodgson; Kimberly H. Jardine; Vivian G. Johnston, Jr.; Neil Kennedy; Thomas E. Mitchell, Herbert A. Meisler; Ron Melton; Arlene Mitchell; Norman D. Pitman, III; Mary Powell; Edna Rivers; Irving Silver; Robert J. Williams.
Honorary Directors include: David J. Cooper; Patsy B. Dow; Angelo Miller; W. Davis Pilot, Jr.; John Saint; Melvin Stein; and Blacksher White-Spunner. The Community Foundation would like to express its gratitude for the services provided by outgoing board member Winston Williams.
In 2008, The University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute was the recipient of the largest grant ever awarded from the Community Endowment Fund. The $150,000 award was used to provide free screening for cancer, hypertension and diabetes at community events in Southwest Alabama.
“At The Community Foundation of South Alabama, we firmly believe each person’s health is critical to the success and well being of our community. For this reason, we chose the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute as our partner for the 2008 Health Initiative. This high impact program ultimately saved the lives of individuals and helped prevent disease,” said Ronald B. Melton, Chair of The Community Foundation of South Alabama.
